Proper use of stainless steel springs will increase the service life of the springs
DATE:2023.07.05
In daily life, the application of springs is ubiquitous. Because springs rust over time, nowadays, with the development of technology, stainless steel springs are not the only ones manufactured.

Its application range is very wide, but if the spring exceeds a certain limit during use, it will cause damage to the spring. How can springs be used to prolong their service life? The following are the specific methods introduced by spring manufacturers to everyone! Springs are commonly used in daily life. Because the spring is a product with a long lifespan, it will rust over time. With the development of technology, a type of stainless steel spring has emerged. Its application range is very wide, but if the spring exceeds a certain limit during use, it will cause damage to the spring. How can springs be used to prolong their service life? The following are the specific methods introduced by spring manufacturers to everyone!

For stainless steel springs, the compression exceeds the limit, and soon after use, the spring has no compression or even no elasticity. We have all encountered this in our daily lives because the compression used exceeds the maximum compression. If the spring rupture pressure is too high, it will not break at normal frequencies. If the spring is used too many times, it can not withstand the pressure range when used on the spring. This means that some people, during the use of springs, experience gaps due to the vibration of the springs, resulting in deformation of the springs. If there is preload, the use of the springs is relatively stable. Stainless steel springs are generally not horizontal, which can cause wear on the spring guide pin and spring, and even cause the spring to break. If a spring is used without guidance, it is easy to cause deformation of the spring body and may break. Therefore, in order to better use the spring, it is necessary to understand the correct use of the spring and not use it in the above situations, otherwise it may cause phenomena such as spring fracture.

Methods to improve the service life of springs:

1. Isothermal quenching of springs

For springs with smaller diameters or sufficient hardenability, isothermal quenching can be used, which not only reduces center deformation but also improves strength and toughness. The Elastic Limit can be increased by tempering again after isothermal quenching, and the tempering temperature is the same as that of isothermal quenching

2. Thermoforming treatment

Thermoforming treatment is a combination of deformation strengthening and heat treatment strengthening of steel to further improve its strength and toughness. Thermoforming treatment can be divided into high temperature, medium temperature, and low temperature. High temperature thermomechanical treatment refers to quenching immediately after deformation in a stable austenitic state, or it can be combined with forging or hot rolling, that is, quenching immediately after Thermoforming. Automotive leaf springs made of 60Si2Mn steel are subjected to high-temperature deformation and heat treatment (930 ℃+18% thermal variation, oil quenching) at 650 ℃ × The high temperature rapid tempering for 3.25 minutes greatly improves its strength and fatigue life.

3. Springs should undergo relaxation treatment after quenching and tempering

Springs that work under external forces for a long time will experience slight permanent (plastic) deformation due to stress relaxation. Especially for springs that work at high temperatures, the stress relaxation phenomenon is more severe, resulting in a decrease in the accuracy of the spring. This is not allowed for general precision springs. Therefore, this type of spring should undergo relaxation treatment after quenching and tempering. Heat treatment process: preload the spring to make its deformation exceed the deformation that may occur during spring operation. Then heat it at a temperature 20 ℃ above the working temperature and keep it warm for 8-24 hours.

4. Shot peening treatment

Springs require high surface quality, and surface defects such as scratches, folds, and oxidation decarburization often become places of stress concentration and sources of fatigue fracture during spring operation. Shot peening is one of the widely used methods to improve the surface quality of springs. If small steel balls are used for high-speed shot peening on the surface of the spring, shot peening treatment not only improves the surface quality of the spring, increases surface strength, and puts the surface in a compressive stress state, thereby increasing the fatigue strength and service life of the spring.

5. Low temperature carbonitriding

The combination of tempering and low-temperature carbonitriding (soft nitriding) process can significantly improve the fatigue life and corrosion resistance of the coil spring.

The above is the correct application of stainless steel springs by spring manufacturers and the correct quenching method of springs. As long as these two aspects are mastered, the service life of stainless steel springs can be greatly increased!
